A PLAY WITH MUSIC BY BENJAMIN TRUONG AND NINA WIENER - MENTORED BY TOM LUZ - BASED ON "THE SORROWS OF YOUNG WERTHER" BY JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE.

LOTTE IS STANDING IN HER ATTIC. A LOT OF TIME HAS PASSED SINCE SHE MET WERTHER FOR THE LAST TIME... SHE DOESN'T REALLY WANT TO THINK ABOUT THE BITTER PAST, AND YET, SHE FINDS WERTHER'S LETTERS AND STARTS READING THEM. QUICKLY AFTER, SHE CATCHES UP WITH THE PAINFULLY BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES, THAT SLOWLY BECOME REALITY AGAIN, INEVITABLY.

LIKE MOST OF THE CLASSIC LITERATURE, THE SUFFERING OF THE YOUNG WERTHER IS TOLD FROM A MALE PERSPECTIVE. WERTHER FINDS HIS OBJET D’AMOUR IN LOTTE AND "USES" HER AS A PROJECTION SCREEN FOR HIS LONGINGS, WHICH HE FORMULATES IN HIS MANY LETTERS. IN "WERTHERS LOTTE", THE STORY IS PRESENTED FROM THE OPPOSITE ANGLE.

THE GENERAL DESPAIR THAT IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO REALLY EXPRESS THE LOVE FOR ANOTHER PERSON IN ONE'S OWN WORDS, LEADS US THE POSSIBILITY TO TRY TO COMMUNICATE THIS EMOTION THROUGH LITERATURE, WHERE WRITERS HAVE FOUND WAYS THAT CAN GET REALLY CLOSE TO ITS CORE. DESPITE THE WIDE EMOTIONAL LOAD OF MANY POEMS, LETTERS AND NOVELS, IT JUST DOESN'T SEEM TO BE POSSIBLE TO REALLY, UNIVERSALLY EXPRESS SUCH FEELINGS APPROPRIATELY. WHERE DOES LANGUAGE START TO FAIL? DUE TO THE IMMENSITY OF  THIS CHALLENGE, SOME CRUCIAL ASPECTS OF THE DEEP REALITY OF FEELINGS SEEM TO GET LOST IN TRANSLATION.
A THEATRE PIECE DEVELOPMENT ABOUT LOVE AND THE LIMITS OF LANGUAGE.
